Most of the work I do is open source, and free to access. (as resources should be!)
Patreon is a great way to support my efforts, both online and in the community. Read below to find out why I decided against forming a nonprofit.
My Patrons receive a more intimate view of my advocacy efforts and gain access to monthly Zoom meetings.
Most of the work I do would benefit from grant funding. However, in February of 2022, I made the difficult decision to not create a nonprofit, ultimately limiting my funding options.
Here's why...
During the 2022 Virginia General Assembly, I went head-to-head with lobbyists from multi-million dollar companies in the fight for communication rights. Those companies ultimately won that fight.
HB 1047 was a modest bill brought forth to protect the rights of nonspeaking students and AAC users in Virginia schools. Unfortunately, due to the concerns shared by these lobbyists, the bill didn't pass.
I learned a lot that day - mainly that I want to use all of my privilege in the fight for communication rights.
Nonprofit organizations have restrictions that I don't have as an LLC. They have to follow certain rules that I don't have to follow.
Yes, I could absolutely use the grant money to support my work and my family, but I choose to advocate without the restraints that are placed on nonprofits.
This is why I created a Patreon page. Thank you for reading, and I appreciate your support.
If you've found my work helpful and you'd like to show your support, I would be forever grateful!
Patreon is a platform which allows you to choose how you support me. I have three options for monthly subscriptions. Each option gets the same benefits, and I'm always looking for ways to thank my supporters.
Patreon is safe to use and you can cancel your support at any time.
With your help, I will continue to change the world in three ways:
To connect parents and educators with resources for supporting neurodivergent kids.
To boost Autistic voices
To help schools create more inclusive and accessible environments for all students
Thank you for considering becoming one of my enablers - I mean supporters.
I'm extremely grateful for the continuous growth of Not an Autism Mom and with your support I can achieve even more.
